Adding Blown-in Insulation Prevents Ice Dams Right from the Start - Boston, Worcester, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Anyone who has lived in cold climates has seen ice dams as well as their damaging effects to many homes around Boston and Worcester. While the sparkling beauty of icicles along the eaves of roofs can be pleasing to the eye, they can actually wreak havoc to your home’s exterior and interior. Ice dams are caused by air leaks and poorly insulated attics, adding insulation to prevent ice dams is a practical choice to help prevent ice dams in the future.

Ice dams are a result of heat escaping from the interior of your home and melting the snow on your roof. Then the freezing temperature causes the water running down the slope of the roof to refreeze, thereby creating a band of ice at the edge of the roof. As the cycle continues, the melting of the snow on the roof can leak into your home causing water-related damages such as stained ceilings, peeling paint, sagging gutters, and dislodged shingles. Blown-in insulation in Boston, MA can be installed to prevent this scenario from recurring. Adding insulation increases the R-value of your existing insulation so it reaches the required level.

Blown-in Insulation Cuts Heat Loss in Attics of Older Homes - Boston, Worcester, MA

Joseph Coupal - Monday, December 01, 2014

The common places at home where heat is usually lost are at the attic floor, roof, and walls, making them a great target for additional insulation. Adding home insulation, particularly in the attic of older homes, is important if you want to cut down on heat loss.

Warm air that is needed in winter can leak from a multitude of areas in an old house. Primarily, heat loss happens through the top of the house where it rises and escape through a roof that has insufficient insulation. In return, cold air is allowed to creep in making your house too cold, specifically when there is a drastic drop in temperature. Without adequate attic insulation not only will you suffer from chilly nights but also from the high energy expense resulting from your efforts to keep your living area comfortable during extremely cold weather conditions.

Keeping older houses warm can be tricky. Older materials which were originally used for insulation may have deteriorated over time, and the energy efficiency of more modern materials has improved dramatically. Today, there are energy-saving and cost-effective options to control the heat flow, such as blown-in insulation in Boston, MA. This can be the least invasive and most efficient method of adding insulation in your old home.

A Case Study in Home Insulation - Boston, Worcester

Joseph Coupal - Monday, December 02, 2013

The House

This lakeside cottage was the first of three identical summer camps built in 1909. It took 2.5 cords of wood and almost 800 gallons of oil to make the mostly uninsulated home livable year-round.

The Homeowner

The owner grew up spending summers in this cottage, and didn’t change anything when she moved in year-round 15 years ago. But heating the uninsulated camp house was taking a toll on the house. Her builder suggested that insulation might solve the home’s heat, air, and moisture problems.

The Consult

Uninsulated walls cavities and huge air pathways that allowed warm air to leak into the attic and led to moisture problems in the walls and roof were identified.

The Project

Opportunities were identified to cut the energy use in half by air sealing and adding attic insulation, insulating wall cavities, and basement foundation walls. This created a continuous thermal barrier between the conditioned living space and the exterior.

The Results

Fuel use dropped dramatically after adding home insulation, and the propane costs went from $200/month to only $82/month!

Adding Attic Insulation Saves Energy

Joseph Coupal - Saturday, January 12, 2013

Now that winter is in full swing, you may be tired of paying high energy bills. By installing additional attic insulation you can keep winter heating bills and summer cooling bills down.

Generally, the recommendations for insulation are:

Attic ---------------------------R 38
Wall ---------------------------R 13
Floor --------------------------R 25, Over Unheated Space
Crawl Space Wall -----------R 25
Basement Wall Interior -----R 11

These insulation levels balance the cost of insulating and the return in energy savings.

There are two types of additional insulation that can be installed in your attic: fiberglass batts (blanket insulation) or blown-in insulation, either cellulose or fiberglass.

Blanket insulation or batts gives you a slightly better R value per inch.

Remember the better you home is insulated, the lower your heating bills. Adding insulation will pay for itself through energy savings.
